Developing & deploying Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe: LIST joins ERTICO – ITS Europe

Published on 11/08/2016

As a Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) recently became a member of the ERTICO – ITS Europe Partnership, with the objective to contribute to the development and the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Europe.

ERTICO – ITS Europe is a public/private partnership that consists of over a hundred partners across eight different sectors, all working towards bringing intelligence into mobility of people and goods in Europe. Putting on its member’s hat, LIST will join a network that is dedicated to increase the cooperation on ITS of all relevant stakeholders in Europe.

ERTICO & LIST

As a new partner, LIST will take part in the activities conducted by ERTICO – ITS Europe and its members. This represents a great opportunity to make connections and inter-connections to both public and private sectors at the heart of cutting-edge ITS research and deployment.

The provided activities are varied and complementary: ERTICO partners have five key tools at their disposal. They can focus on advancing innovation and deployment through the development of EU supported collaboration projects. In parallel, the network launched ERTICO platforms with the objective to focus and deploy different services. As developing and deploying ITS goes further, interest groups and networking events have been launched in order to gather information and provide input to ongoing activities. Finally, ERTICO’s partnership also offers thought leadership activities.

With a specific focus on mobility and logistics, it has been identified together with the ERTICO Partnership that LIST can bring added value to several ERTICO Programmes, such as ITS for Urban Mobility, Connected and Automated Driving, ITS and Freight Transport and Logistics and eMobility. More specifically, LIST’s researchers can share their expertise with the handling of big data from both public transport and infrastructure, different integrated tools used in ITS, smart ticketing, usage of parking lots for electrical vehicles and integration of the latter into the smart grid, and, last but not least, the optimization of the mobility flows related to logistics.

ITS, Luxembourg & LIST

According to the Luxembourg government, Information and communication technologies (ICT) enable the provision of more and more services around public or private mobility, as well as around the combination of different modes of transport. Within the context of a dynamic and innovative ICT sector and based on the implementation of an appropriate framework, Luxembourg shall make use of the opportunities offered by a mobility market in a state of upheaval. Priority will be given to the development of Luxembourg as a living lab of mobility in close cooperation with the private sector. This strategy aims at assuring a constant development of the “Smart Mobility” sector.

In this context, for LIST, the ERTICO Partnership will be particularly interesting and challenging for supporting the deployment of interoperable ITS solutions in Luxembourg and in Europe, in strict cooperation with Luxembourg's businesses and institutions. LIST's participation in co-funded project opportunities to advance ITS will be increased as well as knowledge sharing, networking and visibility in the European and global ITS community

What’s next?

In the coming months, LIST’s experts in Mobility, Transport & Logistics will participate in different workshops and events organised by ERTICO - ITS Europe. They will meet international ERTICO partners and they will also work closely with national governmental bodies.
