Life Cycle Sustainability: zoom on OASIS project

Published on 29/01/2016

In the framework of the project OASIS (Optimization based integrated process modelling-LCA: application to potable water production) the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) organized a workshop open to the general public, with participants both from industry and research organizations. The event took place at LIST’s premises in Belvaux on 28 January 2016 and representatives of all the project partners were present.

About OASIS

OASIS aims at coupling LCA with optimization algorithms, automatically seeking the best design alternative (in the realm of technically and economically feasible solutions) according to predefined environmental criteria. The project is financed by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and started in June 2014.

OASIS is part of the FNR-CORE programme, a competitive funding programme that aims to raise the scientific quality of research in Luxembourg in priority domains. In this frame, an important mission is to directly contribute to strengthening research, leading to the creation of national strategic resources and increased visibility within the research community on international level.

About the workshop

The workshop was divided into two sections. In the morning session, a rigorous framework for the development of more sustainable processes integrating LCA principles with multi-objective optimization, dealing in particular with large-scale optimization problems, was presented to the audience by the keynote speaker, Prof. Gonzalo Guillén-Gosálbez.

The second speaker of the morning, Ana Barbara Bisinella de Faria, presented the results of a challenging application of multi-objective optimization to the domain of waste-water treatment plants (WWTP).

In the afternoon session, the project team presented the current results of the project OASIS and already proposed some possible future research paths, also in view of follow-up projects. The extension of the algorithmic approaches presented in OASIS to the optimization of larger systems, namely large supply chains, is a potential target for future research of the OASIS’s team.

The workshop was conducted in a very interactive fashion.
