Zoom on "Climate & Energy: Industry-Quo vadis?" conference & LIST participation

Published on 20/07/2016

On July 7, 2016, LIST participated in the conference "Climate & Energy: Industry - Quo vadis?" organised by the Business Club Luxemburg together with its members Arcelor Mittal Germany and the Federation of German Industries. The conference was held in the premises of the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Berlin (DE).

Together with the guest of honor, Reinhard Bütikofer- member of the European Parliament - and with high-level representatives from politics, industry and research, Dr Andrew Ferrone - climate expert at LIST and scientific advisor of the Luxembourg Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructures - took part in the discussions. The main topic was the definition of the course that must be set in order for the industry in Germany, Luxembourg and Europe to continue to have a future. Indeed, the results of the Paris Climate Summit COP 21, the uncertain future of the emission rights trading and the impact of current energy policy in Germany and Europe are major challenges for the industry. The energy-intensive industries, such as the steel sector, are a particular focus.

Participants shared their knowledge on “how” industry exists with the necessary European framework for climate protection and further grow. As a complementary position in Research, Development and Innovation (RDI), Dr Ferrone made a speech on the topic "COP21- A scientific background presentation". He was also involved in the panel discussion gathering all invited speakers and experts. As a conclusion of his presentation and based on the main objective of limiting global temperature increase to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, it was clear that an increased action is needed both on the part of industrial production and on the part of each individual.

A conclusion of this meeting is that global solutions developed thanks to a worldwide cooperation are necessary. This means that there is a real opportunity in terms of development of innovative climate-friendly technologies and procedures. LIST will keep bringing its expertise and working in close collaboration with national and international actors, in order to develop advanced technologies and deliver innovative products and services to industry and society.
