The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has the pleasure to inform that its collaborator, Dr Christian Penny, environmental microbiologist, has been awarded the 2014 best short communication prize during the General Assembly of the Société des Sciences médicales du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg which is the medical section of the Institut Grand-Ducal. The Société des Sciences médicales organises twice a year sessions giving to researchers, physicians, veterinaries, etc. the possibility to present in short communications current medical and biomedical issues.

Dr Christian Penny's communication was about the incidence of Campylobacter in Luxembourg's population and the environment, and the development of new characterisation technologies. The communication was done within the frame of the HYPOCAMP project, co-financed by the National Research Fund and conducted in partnership with the National Health Laboratory and the Luxembourg Institute of Health. Campylobacter is the main cause of bacterial gastro-enteritis worldwide. In Luxembourg, the incidence among the population is one of the highest in Europe. The project demonstrated that propagation through the water cycle contributes to the overall public health risk.

Thanks to this prize, Dr Christian Penny will contribute to one of the next issues of the "Bulletin des Sciences Médicales du Grand-Duché du Luxembourg", which is one of the eldest scientific journals in the world (150 years).

Congratulations to Dr Christian Penny!
