Alexandre Bertrand, a researcher in the Environmental Research and Innovation department at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), took home second prize yesterday at the 8th annual SET Plan conference for his poster on multi-objective, integrated, regional energy system optimisation.

Held this year from 21-22 September 2015 in Luxembourg City, within the context of Luxembourg’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the SET Plan conference brought together energy stakeholders from across Europe to share information and ideas on research, innovation and competitiveness related to the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) communicated by the European Commission in September 2015.

Mr. Bertrand’s poster, developed in collaboration with researchers Riad Aggoune from LIST and Prof. François Maréchal from the Ecole Polytechnique Féderale de Lausanne in Switzerland, provided an overview of an innovative method for integrated optimisation of regional industrial waste heat valorisation and heating and cooling utility selection, aiming at minimising investment and operational costs, as well as CO2 emissions.

The awards were presented in the presence of Etienne Schneider, Luxembourgish Minister of Economy, Miguel Arias Cañete, EU Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action, and Tom Eischen, Director General of the General Directorate for Energy and Government Commissioner for Energy of the Ministry of the Economy of Luxembourg.
