We are pleased to announce that WikiFood, a platform for allergy patients developed by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), received the “Patient Experience” award this week at the Luxembourg Healthcare Summit 2015.

Held on 6 October 2015 at Etablissement de Namur in Luxembourg City, this second edition of the summit focused on how connected devices can empower patients to manage their own health. The full chain of actors from the healthcare sector were invited, to discover the current challenges facing the sector and the actions being taken to overcome them.

The Patient Experience award, one of eight prizes given out this year, was presented to the WikiFood team for supporting patients in managing their health. WikiFood takes on the challenge faced by food allergy sufferers in interpreting ingredient labels to ensure that they avoid potential allergens by providing a free online database of food products with a full listing of ingredients. Uploaded by the community of more than 1500 individual users, the database, accessible via desktop or Android app, now contains over 28,000 food products available in Europe. Products can be searched by category or by excluding specific allergens such as gluten or eggs, allowing allergy sufferers to quickly identify the products they want to purchase or avoid.

Initiated by a team of researchers at CRP Henri Tudor, now part of LIST, within the FNR-financed project “Mobile Expert and Networking System for Systematical Analysis of Nutrition-based Allergies” (MENSSANA), the WikiFood platform continues to be developed as part of LIST’s portfolio of personalized services in health and well-being.

As an award winner, WikiFood will also be featured in an upcoming edition of the new magazine BEAST, which will cover business, entertainment, art, science and technology in Luxembourg.
