Zoom on Smart City Energy platform, a LIST technology promoted overseas

At the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), we work with specialized experts in environmental research and innovation with the aim of helping to make our cities smarter. One of our main areas of focus is the Smart City. The Smart City Energy and Region platform is receiving strong and growing interest abroad. We developed the technology in order to support cities in the development of innovative strategies and opportunities for sustainable energies transitions.

About the Smart City Energy and Region platform

The "Smart City Energy and Region Platform" tool enables complex data to be modelled in order to facilitate the decision-making process. It was developed in the framework of the Interreg MUSIC project. LIST technology is based on the flexible framework iGUESS, to integrate energy as a layer into urban planning. The tool enables cities to explore potentials for renewable energy, energy savings, green roofs, and to identify risks regarding urban heat islands and energy poverty. It allows to develop and test measures for Sustainable Energy Action Plans to assess CO2 emissions over time and identify opportunities for energy exchange within a city.

The Smart City Energy platform supports public and private entities in their sustainable energies transitions oriented activities. The tool has subsequently been used for other applications and also generated new collaborations with companies interested in applying LIST's innovative energy modelling techniques in their cities.

A model generating initiatives overseas

The Smart City Energy and Region platform has already been presented in Europe and northern countries and our experts were also invited to different events. In this framework, LIST recently hosted the first edition of a professional Master of Science degree in Energy Policy & Climate through Johns Hopkins University (Washington D.C, US). This collaboration between LIST and the university was a great opportunity to share expertize, to open the way for future interactions and to promote LIST technologies overseas.

Brian Durham, GIS Analyst for the American company Thomas & Hutton, participated in the course. Thomas & Hutton, a privately held, professional services company providing engineering, surveying, planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and consulting services to public and private clients – recently mentioned LIST's technology and would like to promote it to cities in the southeast United States. The final result will be a GIS dataset allowing interested parties to better understand the benefits of transitioning to renewable energies.
