LIST researchers collaborating with the Tudor Museum

In the upcoming 12 months, LIST will collaborate with the Tudor Museum in Rosport - an interactive museum on electricity and accumulator technology - in order to create a new installation explaining the functionality of batteries.

This exhibition capitalises on the concept of Tangible User Interfaces (TUI), a new type of user interface allowing visitors to interact with digital data by manipulating physical objects. The goal is to embark users on a journey of discovery, playfully discovering how Tudor improved upon previous designs to innovate the field of energy storage through his world renowned lead-acid battery.

Visitors will be introduced to a workbench where they can manipulate lead plates, one of the main components of the lead-acid battery. It was on these plates that Tudor innovated on Planté’s and Faure’s designs by fusing lead oxide to them by electrolysis. This design was more robust and enabled the first large scale use of lead-acid batteries. After being introduced (on a previous exhibition) to how a battery functions, they will be able to apply several improvements to rather plain lead plates, and explore how this impacts charging time, capacity, as well as the life cycle of the battery.

LIST researchers will conduct a series of experiments with this exhibition which will allow them to collect field data related to processes and strategies of collaborative complex problem solving in a co-located setting. This will also contribute to one of their research aim as part of their activities in Digital Knowledge Dynamics in the IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department, namely: to develop new methods and tools for facilitating and assessing 21st century skills, such as collaborative complex problem solving.
