LIST researchers invited to present collaborative tool for sustainable mobility scenarios at meeting of EU Transport ministers

On Wednesday, 7 October 2015, LIST had a stand at the first informal meeting of EU and EFTA Transport ministers focused on cycling. Held at the European Convention Center in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, the meeting brought together more than 28 Transport ministers and culminated in a Declaration of Luxembourg recommending the promotion of cycling as a climate-friendly mode of transportation.

LIST researchers Romain Gaasch, Eric Tobias, and Saad Nabbi demonstrated a collaborative decision support tool for sustainable mobility scenarios on a tangible table, deployed at the initiative of Luxembourg Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure François Bausch together with department officials working on soft mobility infrastructure developments in Luxembourg. The interactive table attracted attention throughout the day and resulted in a number of new contacts for LIST from organizations ranging from the national cycling association to officials from European Parliament committees and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Building on existing tangible table applications created in a number of LIST projects, the research team created new layers of information to take into account soft (sustainable) mobility: bicycle, pedestrian and public transport infrastructure, both present and future. For the first time, the urban planning potential of the tangible table as a collaborative decision making tool was demonstrated using isochrone maps applied to a planned cycling and pedestrian bridge that will connect a residential neighbourhood with a business district.

The increased reach and thus mobility of cycling enthusiasts could also be explored for the nearly completed connection between Pfaffenthall and Parc Pescatore, thus showing the immediate effects of the lift.
