Science Festival

On 7-10 November 2019, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) will participate in the twelfth Science Festival, organised by The National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) and the National Research Fund (FNR) at the Neumünster Abbey Cultural Exchange Center in Luxembourg city.

On Thursday 7th and Friday 8th November, the Science Festival will open its doors to students at school in Luxembourg, then to the public during the weekend.

The purpose of this event is to present and promote science and research in Luxembourg and to foster the interest of young people and the general public in science and technology, through interactive workshops, science-related shows and performances.

LIST researchers will hold 3 booths to present their activities:

"Are you wearing or using items that contain dangerous substances?"

Chemical substances of concern are present in everyday household articles. Consumers are generally unaware that everyday articles including toys, kitchenware, clothes and electronics may contain such substances. Through this activity LIST aims to raise awareness on these and the consumer’s right to know in line with European chemicals regulation (REACH). The workshop will introduce a smartphone application, developed in the context of the European AskREACH project, that allows consumers to scan the barcode of an article to see if the article contains any substances of concern. If nothing is flagged in the database, the consumer is given the chance to ask the article supplier directly whether an article contains any substances of concern, again via the application. The visitor will also have the chance to learn about which types of substances of concern may be found in which types of materials (such as phthalates in plastics) and why these substances are a concern to human health and the environment.

"How to master light and sound with smart materials?"

LIST develops smart materials with the ability to transform one form of energy into another – mechanical to electrical, electrical to thermal, thermal to mechanical, mechanical to light and so on. These materials may either be semiconductors, ceramics or even polymers. These materials may be used in a wide range of applications. The workshop aims to show examples of the potential usage of these smart materials, in areas including smart material-made loudspeakers, integrated microphones, acoustic resonators and mechanical energy harvesters for smart lights.

"Programming and electronics with Kniwwelino"

Kniwwelino is the first microcontroller development platform entirely designed for children attending primary education and relay houses in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. During the Science Festival, workshop participants will have the opportunity to discover the basics of programming and electronics with Kniwwelino. They will be able to turn on LEDs, change colours and play sounds using an electronic card and a visual programming language based on blocks.
