Transmission system security enhancement through distribution system flexibility

The intermediate workshop of the FNR CORE project TESTIFY (Transmission system security enhancement through distribution system flexibility) has two goals: 1) learning and obtaining feedback from internationally leading researchers and practitioners in these topics and 2) disseminating our first research results. The project TESTIFY proposes a new approach to manage the overall electrical grid in a secure manner, making optimal use of the flexibility of distributed energy resources (DER) and primarily renewable energy sources (e.g. wind and solar). In particular, the focus is on managing the flexibility, which is present at the medium and low voltage levels, as an additional control means to support secure operation of the transmission grid on short-term. The project addresses this timely and major challenge by answering in an integrated way three fundamental questions: (i) how to quantify the available DER flexibility at the substation interface of transmission and distribution systems, developing a capability chart in active and reactive powers, (ii) how to integrate this flexibility in the security management of grid operators (in the form of a look ahead risk-based multi-period security constrained optimal power flow), and (iii) how to formulate and solve the above problems in a mathematically consistent and computationally efficient manner.
