Environmental informatics

The activities of the Environmental Informatics unit mainly consist in conducting impact driven research, development and innovation within the field of environmental informatics. As a result LIST's researchers design, implement and evaluate innovative ICT methods and tools that contribute to a more sustainable future that not only protects environment but do so while also promoting socio-economic welfare.

Extensive research and development has resulted in a range of innovative ICT tools that are designed to help the public, practitioners and scientists tackle today’s environmental challenges. The activities are organised around four main Technology Lines:

  • Geocomputation
  • Visualisation
  • Augmented and Virtual Reality
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Processing

The unit has a diverse portfolio of projects funded under various competitive calls at national and international level: EU H2020, EU INTERREG, ESA, FNR, ANR, FWF, and NASA. Researchers are also involved in collaborative projects with industry. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the projects, the staff members have developed a solid experience in working with people with various backgrounds from business and academia.

The technology lines have been utilised with a wide range of application fields and are continuously updated.

Application fields

  • Space-related applications
  • Smart Agriculture
  • Environmental Crisis Management, incl. CBRN incidents
  • Energy sector
  • Water sector
  • Biodiversity
  • Sustainability and Circular Economy
  • Biotechnologies
  • Eco-friendly Automotive
  • Security and Defence

The staff members manage a Mixed Reality Lab, equipped with state-of-art augmented and virtual reality systems. They also have access to the LIST's High Performance Computer (HPC). At the end of 2018, a new large visualisation wall will also be available to support our activities.
