LISTalks on Energy Transition: Strengthening the security and resilience of future power grids

The "LISTalks" conference series brings together stakeholders, researchers, industry and authorities to answer state of the art research and innovation questions on our environment, climate change, and sustainability in strategies and design.

Resilience is a relatively recent concept in power grids area as compared to the traditional concept of security (or operational reliability). It had spurred growing research. However, some confusion exists in the community regarding the overlap and differences between security and resilience. This webinar intends to lift this fog. It presents two views on these concepts from industrial perspective, in the first talk, and from research angle, in the second one. The talks will discuss the commonalities and differences between security and resilience and means to strengthen them in future transmission power grids.

SPEAKERS

Rui Pestana received the title of Expert in Energy by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon and Master degree of Electrical Power Engineering from the University of Lisbon. Project leader on the research centre R&D NESTER. Advisor of the System Operator division with REN - Rede Eléctrica Nacional S.A. (Portuguese TSO). Invited Professor at ISEL – Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, from the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. He has been working in several WG of CIGRE, ENTSO-E and European project funded by FP6, FP7 and H2020. He received the “CIGRE Technical Committee Award”.

Florin Capitanescu received the Electrical Power Engineering degree from the Polytechnical University of Bucharest, Romania, in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Liège, Belgium, in 2003. Since 2015, he has been with Luxembourg Institute of science and technology (LIST) as a senior researcher. His main research interests include the application of optimization methods to operation of transmission and active distribution systems, particularly optimal power flow approaches, power system security, voltage instability, and smart sustainable buildings.
