In this position paper, we are concerned with the role of modeling in an enterprise context. In general, the creation, management, and use of models comes at a cost. We content that, especially in an enterprise context, it becomes increasingly important to make explicit trade-offs between the costs related to modeling and some return in relation to the goals of the enterprise. To better reason about such tradeoffs, we propose three concepts: Return on Modeling Effort (RoME), a model's Value in Action (ViA), and the need to manage the Retention of Modeling Effort (RiME). In doing so, we also suggest some of the avenues we intend to follow in further researching these concepts. By means of this position paper, we also hope to engage more colleagues in this fundamental line of research.
