Despite improvements in technologies and procedures, lab safety training remains problematic and often too theoretical. Challenges include providing training as close to the real-situation as possible and which can simulate hazards such as fires and explosions. In this paper we present SmartLab which uses augmented reality using an OST-HMD which allows for training as close to reality as possible without the need to train without using real hazards. In this prototype we simulate and implement two critical cases through OST-HMD for a chemical laboratory safety: 1) acid manipulation and 2) mix water and acid. The system should improve the ability for trainees to memorise the situation. Novel user interface techniques such as the attention funnel and a vocal assistant are used to assist trainees. Two use cases are presented which illustrate the relevancy of the approach.
