As a key player in research and innovation in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), with its employees, is active in the domains of materials, the environment and IT. As an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) and with its interdisciplinary impact-driven approach, LIST contributes to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society. The Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT) translates cutting-edge materials research into applicable technology, with about 190 collaborators. For this, the department cultivates close relationships and joint projects with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes to Luxembourg's and Europe's innovation agenda in Materials Research and Technology.

The Advanced Instrumentation for Ion Nano-Analytics (AINA) group within the Scientific Instrumentation and Process Technology (SIPT) unit of MRT is renowned for developing innovative nano-analytical techniques for materials characterisation and life science applications. During the past few years we have been developing in particular a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) add-on system for the Helium Ion Microscope (HIM) and for a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), allowing the advantages of high spatial resolution with high sensitivity chemical information to be combined for nano-analytics




We are looking for a master student to participate in the development of novel instrumentation for ion beam technology, with a particular focus on radio-frequency (RF) carpets, which are specialised devices of high interest for charged particle optics instrumentation. Such RF carpets are of particular relevance for new kinds of electron impact ion sources, but they also have prospects for other purposes as part of our various instrumentation projects.

The main mission of the student will be the experimental characterisation of RF carpets. Based on the outcome of the experimental investigations the student’s work may also involve design adaptations of the RF carpet hardware/electronics as well as related charged particle optics simulations by using dedicated computer programs.  

During the internship, the master student will have the opportunity to become familiar with high vacuum equipment for charged particle optics instrumentation and get to know how to operate the electronics related to this instrumentation (i.e. high voltage power supplies, detectors). Furthermore, the student will be able to learn how to characterise the experimental performance of the devices as well as how to treat and present the obtained data.
