Master Student Spatial Data Infrastructure (M/F)

Reference : ERIN-2018-INTERN_001

Type: Intern
Contract type: Internship
Duration: 6 months during Spring/Summer 2018
Place: Belvaux

Context

The "Environmental Research and Innovation" (ERIN) department of LIST has an opening for an Intern position. The intern will be integrated in the e-Science unit, which focuses on data analytics & visualization and their applications.

Description

More and more Earth observation data from satellites and other sources is available – at better resolutions and higher frequencies than ever before. The sensors on board of the EU/ESA Copernicus satellites, e.g., produce high-quality radar and optical images that are free for commercial and scientific use.

On the one hand, the exploitation of this data offers numerous new scientific and economic possibilities. On the other hand, the enormous volume of the data, and the availability and speed requirements for their processing, necessitates the development of new algorithms as well as the design and implementation of new IT infrastructure solutions. The evolution of remote sensing is thus comparable to what has happened before with GNSS (global navigation satellite systems such as GPS) applications and the telecommunication market that can rely on professional and reliable infrastructure. This infrastructure includes sophisticated software elements.

An example of a commercial infrastructure provider for the processing of spatial information is SAP, with current and upcoming cloud- and non-cloud solutions for the processing and exploitation of satellite data.

During this internship, the candidate will evaluate these commercial solutions at the software layers (hardware and network issues not considered). In particular, he or she will examine how the new and innovative image analysis algorithms developed by ERIN’s remote sensing experts can be integrated in such a commercial infrastructure. The student will have access to the tools and software packages that have to be analysed.
