Master Student Internship in Visual Analytics of Multilayer Networks (M/F)

Reference : ERIN-2018-INTERN_003

Type: Intern
Contract type: Internship
Duration: 6 months during Spring/Summer 2018
Place: Belvaux

The "Environmental Research and Innovation" (ERIN) department of LIST has an opening for an Intern position. The intern will be integrated in the e-Science unit, which focuses on data analytics & visualization and their applications.

In the framework of the BLIZAAR project (an international collaborative research project funded by ANR and FNR), the e-Science Unit of LIST has developed visual analytics tools for multilayer biological networks. The comprehension of complex biological processes relies on the analysis and visualization of a very large number of interactions between genes, proteins and metabolites which are active inside the cells and living tissues. The broadness and variety of questions raised by biology researchers requires the extraction of subsets of data depending on the question at hand, which can only be achieved by a programmer before any analysis can be run.

The internship will focus in particular on the creation and evaluation of interactive visualizations supporting biologists in the specification of relevant interaction networks in a self-service manner. The required work includes the extension of existing middleware to query a graph database (neo4j) containing a large number of biological interactions. The intern will also have to integrate his work with existing multilayer network visualizations, and possibly create his own.
