The “IT for Innovative Services” (ITIS) department of LIST is looking for a trainee for a mission of research and development in the area of situation identification and context-awareness in Internet of Things and Smart Home environments. The project involves conducting a state-of-the-art analysis and implementing / testing a software prototype.
The internship will take place at the premises of LIST in the “Maison de l’Innovation” situated in Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg. The successful candidate will join the ADAPT research group, which focuses on Knowledge-based Context-Aware Adaptive Systems, in the DSA unit.
The intern will be supervised by a researcher from the ADAPT group with whom she/he will work closely in collaboration. She/he will be integrated in our multidisciplinary team and will benefit from the interaction and advice from other members of the DSA’s groups. In parallel, our research environment encourages the spirit of initiative and autonomy, so the intern will be given the possibility to develop his/her own ideas to progress the project.
The traineeship compensation is fixed to 1000 EUR per month.
The rise of IoT devices fosters the development of applications for Cyber-Physical-Social Systems, like smart buildings. Today the things are connected, but intelligence stays mainly in central controllers. The Cognitive IoT (CIoT) is considered as the next generation of IoT, forming a Collective Artificial Intelligence where things are augmented with autonomous software agents, self-coordinating for distributed reasoning and collaborative decision-making, and paving the way for the design and implementation of a next-generation of smart environments.
Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) and Internet of Things (IoT) are complementary streams of research. Agents are a concept from Artificial Intelligence, with focus on autonomous, reactive and adaptive behaviour, potentially organised to collaborate, while IoT entities are based on embedded computing hardware optimized for wireless connectivity and energy efficiency. The goal of this project is to extend Things of the IoT with cognitive agents in order to obtain Cognitive Things that are able to collaborate to reach a global goal.
