Context

 

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is offering a full time research associate position in the framework of a public private partnership on innovative plant-sourced bioactive molecules for dietary supplements and cosmetics.

The research associate will be part of the Environmental and Industrial Biotechnologies research unit (BIOTECH) at the Department of Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) at LIST. With a team of more than 170 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and IT science, the ERIN department has the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle major environmental challenges our society is facing today: climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control. The RDI activities of the BIOTECH unit relate to the sustainable valorization of plant-based molecules for industrial applications.

The talented scientist will actively contribute to projects on plant secondary metabolite production and extraction as well as the evaluation of their health-related properties for the elaboration of new commercial products. The position is envisaged to start as soon as possible, and is planned to last for 24 months.

 

Description

 

The R&T Associate intervenes in the framework of two projects of the RDI research group.

In this framework, she/he will mainly:

  • Develop small to medium scale plant cell culture lab operations dedicated to the production of bioactive compounds to be incorporated into commercial products.
  • Assess the health-related properties of different extracts obtained from plant cell cultures and industry bio-products through the use of enzymatic- and in vitro cell-based assays.
  • Interact with team partners being involved in the development of sustainable and industrially scalable extraction methods of plant secondary metabolites.
  • Contribute directly to the development of a pilot-scale process.

The researcher will work as part of a dynamic scientific team and participate in team and project meetings. She/he will interact effectively and positively with a wide variety of people and facilitate the teamwork needed to efficiently accomplish project goals.
She/he will support filing of patents and writing of scientific publications.

 


Profile

 

Education

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in bioscience engineering, biochemistry, agrofood science, plant cell culture, biotechnology or related field with experience in plant-sourced metabolite production

Required seniority

  • 2/3 years of research experience in the private sector is considered as an asset

Competencies

  • Previous experience on in vitro cell-based assays to characterize health-related properties of plant natural products is considered as a must
  • Solid experience with the development and use of state-of-the-art analytical methods for identification and/or quantification of plant secondary metabolites such as phenolic compounds is essential. These include for example advanced chromatographic techniques coupled with various detectors such as mass spectrometry
  • Strong knowledge on data analysis and experimental design is required
  • Clear interests for innovation in natural product development is required
  • Strong knowledge on plant cell culture using 250 mL – 30L scale bioreactors as well as lab operation, including weekly experimental and operational planning is considered as an asset
  • Previous experience with a nutraceutical company is considered as an asset
  • Ability to work effectively in confidentiality with the industrial partner is required
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems while maintaining a positive attitude is required

Language

  • Fluency in English is mandatory
  • Knowledge of French and/or German is considered as an asset
