Context

 

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The successful candidate will join ERIN’s Environmental Research and Technology Platform (ERTP). ERTP makes state-of-the art monitoring, analytical, computational and modelling resources accessible to industry, public stakeholders and academics. It offers a unique combination of high-level expertise, state-of-the art instruments and fully equipped labs for environmental analysis, integrative biology, as well as a dense hydro-climatological and biodiversity measurement network. She/He will be part of ERTP’s Observatory for Climate and Environment (OCE).

We are looking for a talented, creative, and enthusiastic individual who will have the opportunity to work in emerging fields related to environment. She/he will contribute to the design and construction of sensors, environmental instrumentation and data transmission systems for on-going environmental monitoring applications. Reporting to the OCE coordinator, the mechatronics engineer will develop functional and technical requirements. She/he will be embedded in an existing mechatronics engineering and environmental research team and participate in the interpretation of these requirements into system specifications and prototypes.

 

Description

 

More specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • Participate in all aspects of development of new innovative products/prototypes in support to ERTP and research units’ activities, i.e. develop comprehensive environmental monitoring systems, including the design and the implementation of real-time signal processing using various analogic and digital sensors
  • Improve currently used/developed products (ex: efficiency, miniaturization, product lifetime, etc.)
  • Support the maintenance activities of the department’s environmental sensor lab, including updating and deployment of different sensors, battery management, data loggers, and related equipment both at the laboratory and field level
  • Contribute to the development of new solutions for energy efficient technology of data acquisition and transmission from environmental sensor networks operating at high spatial and temporal resolution
  • Create custom circuit designs and PCB layouts in collaboration with other project team members to build necessary components
  • Contribute to the design and preparation of prototypes
  • Respect “Health Security Environment” protocols
  • Proactively propose improvements

The applicant will also be asked to:

  • Create/participate in the creation of prototypes that could lead to patent filling
  • Train users (LIST staff and external users) on the use of developed products
  • Contribute to the definition of development projects related to her/his field
  • Contribute to the acquisition of funding related to the activity
  • Maintain state of the art in his/her technological field
  • Document her/his own work in order to ensure the reproducibility and guarantee the traceability of the results
  • Write technical and analytical reports, prepare presentations when required.
  • Define new processes, methods, protocols, systems and solutions to comply with RDI project requirements

 


Profile

 

Education

  • Engineering degree in one/several of the following fields would be required: mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, telecommunications engineering, systems engineering and control engineering degrees
  • Applicants with Ms in Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, or related field will also be taken into consideration

Required seniority

  • 3 years minimum of professional experience, dealing with sensor technology, data logging, and prototype development

Competencies

The successful applicant will be integrated in a team of professionals who will share their expertise and know-how with her/him.

Prerequisites for a good integration to the team/research department are the following:

  • Be a team player with good capacities to listen, learn and also to share knowledge with others
  • Have a DIY state of mind; be curious, methodical, rational, analytical, and logical. Effectively use trial and error approach
  • Be service oriented and proactive in the realisation of the work to be done
  • Be responsible, implicated and capable to organise own work. Ability to plan and manage a variety of activities in parallel
  • Be communicative and capable of interacting proactively with people

Required technical skills:

  • Know fundamental principles of electrical, mechanical, software, and control engineering
  • Have experience in embedded control systems and signal processing (analog and digital)
  • Experience in dealing with microcontroller and sensor boards (e.g., Raspberry pi, Arduino, Waspmote), wireless interface as well as industrial protocol (e.g., Can Bus, Modbus, RS232/485)
  • Experience in data transmission by applying different technology e.g., LoRAWAN, NFC, GSM, Radio communication
  • Knowledge on Over the Air Programming (OTAP) is an asset
  • Proficiency in computer programming and electromechanical design/simulation software (e.g. C++, Matlab, R or similar programming and web-based data application)
  • Competences in prototyping—from creating simple wireframes to testing fully functional mockups – is considered as a strong asset

Language

  • Proficiency in English
  • French or German is an asset
