Engineer in bioprocessing

Reference : ERIN-2019-009

Type: Engineer
Contract type: Permanent contract
Duration: CDI
Place: Hautcharage

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is offering a permanent engineer position in bioprocess engineering. The successful candidate will join the “Environmental Research and Innovation” (ERIN) department, and in particular its Environmental Research and Technology Platform (ERTP). With a team of more than 180 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and IT science, the ERIN department has the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle major environmental challenges our society is facing today: climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, and efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.

The ERTP makes state-of-the art monitoring, analytical, computational and modelling resources accessible to industry, public stakeholders and research. It offers a unique combination of high-level expertise, state-of-the art instruments and fully equipped labs for environmental analysis, integrative biology, as well as a dense hydro-climatological and biodiversity measurement network. The selected candidate will join more specifically the GreenTech platform, which is gathering the equipment and expertise developed at LIST in analytical chemistry, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, with a special focus on environmental and plant samples. The platform can perform a range of analytical services and relies on its instrumentation, infrastructure and know-how to offer “à la carte” analyses. The nature of investigated samples is very diverse, including water, soil, plants, microorganisms, cell lines, animal tissues, to name a few.  In addition, the bioreactor facilities and downstream processing equipment allow providing researchers and industrial partners a research infrastructure for end-to-end bioprocess development (up to TRL5).

We are looking for a motivated and experienced bioprocess engineer with a significant background in the development and optimisation of bioprocesses.

The hired engineer will in particular:

  • Conduct and document laboratory bioreactor experiments with a focus on process definition and understanding, experimental design and troubleshooting, as well as data management and analysis.
  • Be responsible for the monitoring and troubleshooting of the equipment of the facility. The work will include the maintenance and setting up of instruments and the development of new methods and processes.
  • Be involved in the general management of the laboratories of the bioreactor facility and the training of engineers and researchers from both the platform and the research units.
  • Have an active part in the validation of the experimental schemes and organisation (e.g. reservation/availability of the adequate material).
  • Strongly interact with team partners being involved in the development and optimization of small to pilot-scale processes.
  • Disseminate, valorise and transfer RDI results (patents, licenses, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences and fairs).

The engineer will work as part of a diverse support team and participate in team and project meetings. She/he will interact effectively and positively with a wide variety of people and facilitate the multidisciplinary teamwork needed to efficiently accomplish project goals.

  • An engineer degree, a master degree, PhD or equivalent in biological or biochemical engineering, biotechnology or related field with experience in production processes

  • At least 3 years of experience in bioprocessing
  • Recognised knowledge and technical expertise in plant and microbial cell culture production in lab and pilot scale advanced bioreactors
  • Knowledge of plant / microbial cell biology and cell culture techniques (aseptic processing, cell line development, bioreactors, Wave bags, etc.)
  • Excellent skills for lab operation design, including weekly experimental and operational planning
  • Be a strong team player and have an ability to collaborate effectively on complex projects is a must
  • Ability to work effectively in confidentiality with the industrial partner is required
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems while maintaining a positive attitude is required
  • The candidate should be highly motivated, pro-active and open for new challenges

  • English is mandatory
  • French or German would be considered as an asset

Candidates interested in the above position can apply online on our website
The application file should include:

  • A CV
  • A motivation letter
  • The names of two or three referees
  • If possible, a list of publication, invited talks, patents and granted projects
