As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation

2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

She/he will join ERIN's Environmental and Industrial Biotechnologies (BIOTECH) unit. This RDI unit has developed expertise in i) environmental risk assessment and microbial isolation, identification and characterization, ii) proofing new concepts using metabolic engineering and integrative biology approaches for the production of biomolecules of industrial interest produced by plants or microorganisms, iii) developing new technologies and processes to control, treat and remediate environmental pollutions, with a focus on microorganism-based biotechnologies and iv) developing bio-process engineering solutions to convert organic resources into energy and molecules for industry. The BIOTECH unit carries out impact-driven research geared to the development of bio-based products and processes of industrial interest, new biorefinery concepts for more efficient and sustainable processes, and new technologies for the detection and treatment of environmental pollution. The selected candidate will more specifically join the Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology research group, which among others develops new monitoring tools for the surveillance of the microbial safety of water resources.

 

Description

 

The applicant will be asked to work on a project related to the surveillance, monitoring and analytics of the seasonal prevalence of cyanobacteria in various bathing and recreational areas in Luxembourg, using different approaches including classical microbiology tools, but also deployment of new air- and water-borne devices. Result analysis and valorisation are another crucial part of the mission.

During the course of the project, the applicant is also expected to:

  • Manage the daily research work allowing the smooth progress of the project
  • Carry out the planning and execution of field campaigns and laboratory work
  • Combine result analysis on various projects and datasets, draw hypotheses based on these analyses
  • Contribute to the technological development and deployment of new air and waterborne devices
  • Contribute to the acquisition of new RDI projects with public and private partners

Furthermore, the main responsibilities of the selected candidate will include

  • Manage independently parts of the project, collaborate constructively with the PI
  • Formulate innovative/scientific/ technologic concepts 
  • Disseminate, valorise and transfer RDI results (patents, licenses, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences, etc.)
  • Actively collaborate with other researchers in order to promote interdisciplinary activities internally and externally

 


Profile

 

Education

  • PhD in environmental microbiology, cyanobacteria characterization, molecular biology, optical microscopy, or related disciplines (limnology etc.)

Required seniority

Preferably, at least 4 years of post-doctoral experience or previously relevant acquired knowledge in the required scientific and technical skills.

Required qualifications include :

  • Thorough field (campaign planning and logistics, sampling and data acquisition) and laboratory experience (microscopy and molecular biology for cyanobacteria identification and characterization, cyanotoxin analyses, physical-chemical data acquisition and analytics) 
  • Result valorisation skills and the ability to work with a team 
  • The capacity to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders 
  • A demonstrated record of publications
  • Excellent writing- and reporting/presentation skills (scientific level)
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills with the proven ability to effectively communicate across different levels of the organization and with stakeholders/project partners
  • Result oriented attitude
  • Able to handle multiple tasks and changing priorities
  • Willingness to work collegially in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment

Technical skills

  • The candidate will preferably have hands-on experience in environmental monitoring, cyanobacteria characterization skills (microscopy, molecular biology, cyanotoxin analysis), and general microbiology knowledge (including biosafety)

Language skills

  • English is mandatory
  • Luxembourgish, French or German will be considered as an asset
