Your work environment

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You will be part of the LIST Environmental Research and Innovation department

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future with the objectives of

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

What you will be doing

Financial markets are expected to contribute substantially to the transition necessary to keep global warming under the 2°C threshold. An increasingly wide variety of financial instruments is being offered to fuel this transition, among which green funds (e.g. aggregating stocks from the companies deemed most virtuous in their sector, or from a sector itself deemed contributing to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions), and green bonds (which constitute a fund dedicated exclusively to projects with a net mitigating effect). However, most companies do not have the resources to quantify their net contribution to a low-carbon economy, and significant efforts are necessary to identify the key data needed to evaluate properly (i.e. following a lifecycle approach) the environmental impacts of financial products.

The intern will work closely with a team of researchers from environmental engineering, finance and economics on a larger project to develop measurement frameworks for sustainable finance products.

The objectives of this internship are to:

  • Link financial data on green funds to life cycle inventory databases
  • Inventory green bond initiatives at a global scale and map the projects funded by these green bonds,
  • Support the development of methodology to assess the contribution of indirect environmental impacts to overall environmental impacts of investments
