Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
The Structural Composites Unit is strategically positioned in the framework of National Composites Centre - Luxembourg initiative (NCCL) to address the development of high-performance and multifunctional polymer-based composites. The research team drives the next generation of composites engineering to bring about functional and ultra-lightweight materials and structures which are architected at several scales of observation up from their basic constituents, and covering interfaces and interphases at all levels. This work aims at advancing knowledge in experimental, and multi-scale and multifield modelling and design of multifunctional and ultra-lightweight and high-performance composites which are reliable and sustainable. Experimental and computational methodologies and tools are developed to cover the full composites development chain, from the engineering of materials and processes, through structural design optimisation, to manufacturing, and enable multi-objective performance optimization. Full-scale composite technology demonstrators are brought to the industry, hence making them available for Luxembourg, Grande Region and European societies.
The Structural Composites Unit (SC Unit) hosts a FNR PEARL Chair with the project ‘Multiscale data-driven virtual design for manufacturing of composite materials: Driving the next generation of ultra-lightweight additively manufactured fibre-reinforced polymers (DRIVECOMP).
In the framework of the DRIVECOMP project, and to accomplish its overall R&D strategy, the SC Unit is seeking a Lead Research & Technology Associate in the field of additive manufacturing of polymer composite materials.
A strong focus will be put on 3D printing of composites, especially Fused Filament Fabrication of thermoplastics reinforced with continuous and discontinuous fibres. Nevertheless, the research scope includes other ground-breaking composites 3D-printing techniques coming to market as well as more traditional advanced composites manufacturing approaches as Automated Fibre Placement and Robotized Filament Winding.
The main purpose of the research is to leverage these additive manufacturing techniques to achieve novel ultra-lightweight structural composites that are highly tailored to specific applications in the aeronautical and automotive sectors, among others. Behind these ultra-lightweight concepts is a long-term vision towards the development novel paradigms in sustainable mobility such as Urban Air Mobility.
As a Lead R&T Associate, you will collaborate with an existing team with strong skills on composites computational analysis to achieve efficient manufacturing processes and optimally-designed composite structures. The coupling and integration of additive manufacturing processes is also in the scope the activities, in order to achieve complex additively manufactured parts such as ultra-lightweight sandwich structures which can accomplish multiple simultaneous design objectives such as load-bearing and crashworthiness. In addition, you will collaborate with an existing team with expertise in engineering of composite material interfaces in the effort to implement approaches to improve the quality of additively manufactured parts and joining processes by means of interface adhesion enhancing processes.
Hence, the successful candidate should be a recognized researcher in the field of processing of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers and composites, including joining and assembly by means of laser/IR welding and adhesive bonding. Your expertise should include the modelling of processes, as well as their optimization and of the produced composite parts. In addition, you should have contributed decisively to the advancement of Additive Manufacturing of composites, in particular of 3D printing of fibre-reinforced polymers.
You should have an excellent academic background and a strong record of accomplishments regarding publications, patents and proposal writing and project management.
Experience with application-oriented research is considered a strong asset, including collaboration(s) with industry and transfer of RDI results to public and/or private partners.
