Master Student Internship in Surface treatment and physico-chemistry

Reference : MRT-2019-Intern-010

Type: Intern
Contract type: Internship
Duration: 5 months
Place: Belvaux

Context

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops advanced technologies and delivers innovative products and services to industry and society. As a major engine of the diversification and growth of Luxembourg’s economy through innovation, LIST supports the deployment of a number of solutions to a wide range of sectors, including energy, IT, telecommunications, environment, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing at national and European level. Thanks to its location in an exceptional collaborative environment, namely the Belval Innovation Campus, LIST accelerates time to market by maximizing synergies with different actors, including the university, the national funding agency and industrial clusters.

The Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT) translates cutting-edge materials research into applicable technology, with about 180 collaborators. For this, the department cultivates close relationships and joint projects with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes to Luxembourg's and Europe's innovation agenda in Materials Research and Technology.

This internship is carried out in the frame of the Sustainable Polymeric & Composite Materials (SUSMAT) research unit. This unit aims at the production of new environmentally friendly functional polymers and composites, studying the physico-chemical and thermo-mechanical behaviour of the related materials by a combined approach of instrumented experimental testing and adequate numerical modelling. Assembly techniques are very important in that frame since they allow the development of multi-materials solution for industry, for instance through the joining of a polymer or a polymer based composite with a metal.

Description

LaserSTAMP project description:

Combining the very specific material properties of polymers and metals enables a variety of products with tailored properties. As metals and polymers are well known and understood, the combination of both cannot be used due to missing joining knowledge.

The objective of project LaserSTAMP is to introduce a laser based thermal welding process for hybrid polymer-metal structures. Whereas successful research projects on thermal joining of polymer-metal structures have shown the general feasibility of selected material combinations, the comprehensive scientific process understanding and explanation of the joining phenomena is still missing.

The main goal of the project is to understand the physicochemical bonding phenomena. We will investigate the impact of different surface treatments. As energy source, a brilliant laser beam source will be used.

Recent results from our team emphasized the prominence of aluminum (Al) surface modification to promote the adhesion between modified Al and polyamide 6.6 (PA) after laser welding. However, further investigations are needed in order to provide relevant results when the surface chemistry of both adherents is significantly modified.

Therefore, the objective of this internship is focused on the development of thin coating deposition methods (mainly by dipping/spraying techniques) on Al. These coatings aim at promoting the adhesion between Al and PA. The surface chemistry of the coating will be chosen to develop a good adhesion with PA. Coating characterization techniques will be useful to understand the results in terms of deposition parameters and adhesion promotion, and in order to improve the adhesion promotion effect.

Depending on the progress of this study dedicated to coating deposition on Al, the same kind of investigations can be envisioned by coating the PA side for further adhesion promotion with Al.
