As a key player in research and innovation in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), with its employees, is active in the domains of materials, the environment and IT. As an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) and with its interdisciplinary impact-driven approach, LIST contributes to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society.
The Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT) translates cutting-edge materials research into applicable technology, with about 150 collaborators. For this, the department cultivates close relationships and joint projects with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes to Luxembourg's and Europe's innovation agenda in Materials Research and Technology.

The PhD student will be involved in the frame of the LIGNOBENZ CORE project. LIGNOBENZ is a FNR funded CORE project, aiming at providing a new approach for the chemical modification of lignin to promote its processability. It is envisioned to increase the reactivity of lignin toward benzoxazine chemistry and to synthesize monomers with a high rate of alkyl chains helping lignin processability. The PhD student will handle all the chemical modifications of lignin, as well as studying the polymerization of the newly created monomers. In addition, she/he will investigate the structure-properties relationship of the new monomers.

  • MSc in Polymer chemistry

  • A first identified experience in the field of benzoxazine chemistry would be a plus.
  • Organic synthesis
  • Polymer synthesis
  • Good knowledge and practice of molecular characterization techniques (1H, 31P  and 13C NMR, HMBC, HSQC, FTIR, MS, GPC)
  • Physico-chemical characterization of polymers (DSC, DMA, TGA, rheology)
  • Good practice of lab work

  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
