The successful candidate will join the “Environmental Research and Innovation” (ERIN) department. With a team of more than 170 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and environmental informatics, the department has the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle major environmental challenges our society is facing today: climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.
The ERIN department of LIST has an opening for a researcher position in the field of geocomputation in the framework of national and international research projects related to geosimulation, geoanalytics and space-time uncertainty propagation.
The researcher will be integrated in the Environmental Informatics unit, which focuses on artificial intelligence, mixed reality systems, visualisation, geocomputation and their application to environmental issues.




The research projects the candidate will contribute to, focus on the implementation of geospatial simulation and geoanalytics integrating such tools as interoperable web processing services to enable city wide energy savings potentials and develop geospatial specifications for energy management systems, predict crop disease risk, and implement an uncertainty propagation and downscaling tools for flood prediction and risk assessment.

Concretely, the researcher intervenes in the framework of one or several projects of the RDI research group she/he belongs to.

The researcher’s main mission is to conduct research, development and innovation and to participate to the definition and contribution with minor guidance to one or several RDI projects.

RDI work:

  • Propose and validate original scientific concepts in space-time uncertainty propagation analysis and space-time downscaling for flood prediction and risk assessments; implement the concepts for distributed computing
  • Further develop an existing geospatial energy tool as an interoperable geospatial web processing services to enable city wide energy savings potentials
  • Develop geospatial specifications for energy management systems
  • Model geospatial distribution of crop disease risks using space-time
  • (geo-)statistics and implement it for distributed computing
  • Manage the daily research work allowing the smooth progress of the projects
  • Actively collaborate with other researchers in order to promote interdisciplinary activities internally and externally

Dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RDI results:

  • Write scientific publications, technical reports, patents
  • Participate to scientific conferences, workshops and business events
  • Contribute to the valorisation of software prototypes (e.g. via licences)





  • PhD degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative science subject related to Geocomputation (geoinformatics, computational geography, computer science, engineering or similar)

Required seniority

  • Experience in geostatistics and space-time uncertainty propagation analysis in environmental data sciences
  • Experience in environmental modelling and the implementation of scientific methods and algorithms
  • Experience of software development



  • Good skills associated with analysis, processing and/or visualisation of environmental data
  • Strong programming skills in R and/or Python
  • Knowledge in OGC web services and Geographic Information Systems, in particular GRASS GIS


  • Skills in handling large volumes of (heterogeneous) data
  • Knowledge of Linux system administration
  • Knowledge in Apache Spark


  • English is mandatory
  • Luxembourgish, French and/or German are an asset
