Context

 

As a key player in research and innovation in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is active in the domains of materials, the environment and IT. As an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) and with its interdisciplinary impact-driven approach, LIST contributes to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society. The Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT) translates cutting-edge materials research into applicable technology. For this, the department cultivates close relationships and joint projects with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes to Luxembourg's and Europe's innovation agenda in Materials Research and Technology.

The Plasma Process and Engineering (PPE) group of the MRT department at the LIST has a recognized reputation in the field of the atmospheric-pressure plasma technology. In particular, the research activities on thin film deposition have promoted the Group to a leading position in the field. The research activities of the PPE group cover fundamentals, process engineering, prototype development and applications.

The Molecular Plasma Group (MPG) is a young SME company based in Luxembourg with the business spirit of becoming a full-service provider offering application development as well as design, construction and servicing of equipment ranging from lab systems for R&D centers and universities up to industrial in-line systems for continuous production. The business activity is to provide very thin films and process solutions using a wide range of precursor molecules in an atmospheric plasma allowing designing customized surface functionalities.

 

Description

 

The junior researcher, as a post-doc position, will participate in the research and development activities of a granted collaborative project between LIST and MPG, in the framework of a Public Private Partnership national funding instrument (www.fnr.lu). The project called RESUPPLI aims at the development of robust superhydrophobic solutions deposited by atmospheric-pressure plasma to meet the market (i.e. end-users) requirements. The innovative fluorine-free solutions will target applications on the market of hydrophobic coatings with anti-corrosion, anti-icing/wetting as well as self-cleaning properties.

The candidate will take a main role in developing thin films and in their structural, mechanical, chemical and wettability characterizations. In consultation with the project leader, the junior researcher will design and perform relevant experiments, analyse and interpret the results, and participate in the method transfer and preliminary testing.

Education

  • PhD in Polymers, Materials Science or Engineering

Required seniority

  • Up to 3 years after PhD completion

Competencies

  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong background in applied polymer chemistry
  • Experience in the deposition of functional polymeric thin films and their characterization.
  • Proven knowledge in plasma polymerization is an asset.
  • Ability to execute a project to completion independently
  • Writing and publication/patenting skills
  • Excellent academic record
  • Experience in applications/industrial partnership
  • Team player in a multidisciplinary environment

Language

  • Good spoken and written English is mandatory
