Engineer in Cell Biology (M/F)

Reference : ERIN-2019-059

Type: Engineer
Contract type: Fixed term contract
Duration: 5 months
Place: Belvaux

Context

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The applicant will join Environmental Research and Innovation Department and will be incorporated in the Environmental Health Group. The Environmental Health Group develops complex 3D - in vitro models for toxicological testing as a major research activity. Such models undergo in house validation under laboratory conditions and are applied to a wide range of contaminants from chemicals to nanomaterials. These models are then applied within nationally and internationally funded research projects and in collaborative research projects with industry.

She/he replaces an employee on maternity leave and will work in the framework of projects aiming at further development, pre-validation and application of new in vitro models for lung toxicity, which are currently lacking models in the field of alternative methods. The projects are designed to help bridge the technical and funding gap between research-driven discoveries and their commercialisation/utilisation, thereby enhancing the impact of Luxembourg’s research on economy and society.

Description

The applicant’s main tasks will be related to recently funded projects in which a set of assays will be applied and further developed along the TRL scale with the final aim to commercialise these assays.

She/he will mainly be asked to:

  • Ensure the maintenance of the various cell lines
  • Assemble 3D inserts for exposure experiments
  • Perform 3D in vitro exposure experiments
  • Sample preparation of biological samples
  • Analyse samples (biochemical, molecular biological methods)
  • Actively engage in the further development of existing in vitro models
  • Actively propose potential improvements and test for their added value
