Reference : ERIN-2020-029

Type: Researcher
Contract type: Permanent contract
Place: Belvaux

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation

(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bio-resources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The selected candidate will join its Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit which is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human driven systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policy-making. Within the SUSTAIN Unit, the applicant will be incorporated in the Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (LCSA) research group. The activities conducted within the LCSA group mainly consist in the development and application of methods, metrics and tools to assess the sustainability performance of products, technologies and policies for both industrial organisations and policy makers.

The successful applicant will have to develop her/his own research stream in the field of sustainability assessment of circular system, with special emphasis on the assessment of the social dimension and of the positive environmental and human benefits generated by Circular Economy. To this respect, the researcher shall be involved in the Social Life Cycle Assessment field of research, participating to working groups and other initiatives at European level. Moreover, the integration into a life cycle sustainability assessment (covering also financial aspects), is a further part of the envisioned research work. The applicant shall also develop research in the modelling of circular system, with particular attention to the end of life of products and materials and how open and closed loops can be effectively considered in sustainability assessments. The research work shall lead to publications in top ranked journals and, at the same time, involve close collaborations with industry and public policy-makers, to foster socio-economic impacts.

Thus, main tasks related to this position are:

  • Develop Research and Technology project proposals, targeting EU funding, national funding and collaborative industrial partnerships
  • Lead the funded projects as Principal investigator and further valorise the projects’ outcomes in terms of publications, workshops and other dissemination means
  • Develop external collaborations, partnerships and networks
  • Conduct and support high level scientific research that can be valorised

In order to target the above-mentioned research topics, the applicant shall demonstrate proven knowledge and experience in the field of Sustainability Assessment, an excellent track record of scientific publications in highly respected journals as well as previous experience in working with industry.

  • A PhD is considered an asset Education PhD in Engineering or Natural Science, specilalisation in Life Cycle Assessment is an asset

Required seniority

  • The candidate is expected to have at least 4-year experience in a research environment after completion of the PhD
  • Previous experience in working with private companies and public authorities is an asset, especially with regard to LCA-related projects
  • Various years of experience in an RTO setting is an asset
  • Working experience in international and interdisciplinary teams

  • Track record in project writing, management of projects and scientific publications
  • Knowledge of Social LCA and Circular Economy indicators is an asset
  • Broader knowledge of Environmental LCA, life cycle costing and LCSA is an asset
  • Skills with LCA software (e.g. Simapro, OpenLCA) is an asset
