Group Leader "Sustainable Energy Systems" (M/F)

Reference : ERIN-2016-002

Type: Researcher
Contract type: Permanent contract
Duration: CDI
Place: Belvaux

The Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation department (ERIN) of LIST is developing knowledge, transferable technologies (software and lab models) and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability of human driven systems, with particular focus on manufacturing industry, land-territorial management, renewable energy production and smart grids. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policy-making.
The SUSTAIN Unit empowers innovation via four expertise areas: 1) life cycle sustainability assessment 2) environmental health 3) sustainable energy systems (SES) and 4) environmental policies.
You will join the SUSTAIN Unit and lead the sustainable energy systems (SES) research development and innovation group, which counts today 4 highly motivated researchers. The group develops RDI activities in the field of energy, with particular focus on: the integration of renewable energy sources into smart grids; modelling, optimisation, control & forecasting algorithms for energy systems, including decision support tools for operation and planning purposes. Within the framework of the mission of SUSTAIN, the group aims at delivering simplified models of (multi-) energy system components for sustainability assessment. The group´s ambition is to drive knowledge transfer from research to stakeholders in Luxembourg and Greater Region/Europe in these strategic fields.

Your mission is to further develop the SES RDI group, establish a nationally renowned and internationally visible research group reaching a critical size of 8 – 12 FTE within 4 years. To this aim, and depending on your previous experience, you will leverage different funding schemes at national and International level, like e.g. (if eligible) the ATTRACT scheme of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR -
We are looking for high quality candidates able to establish a strong research group and research infrastructure in the domain of smart distribution energy systems, combining fundamental research with immediately and prospectively applicable solutions for the industry.
The goal is to implement a multidisciplinary research approach, taking also advantage of recent advances in ICT and big data analytics, to support tackling challenges in the area of smart distribution grids management (planning, operation and control).
The research group should develop new solutions able to manage the growing complexity of distribution power networks related to the growing integration of renewable dispersed generation. Through its expertise and demonstrators/testbeds, the established research group should offer a holistic expertise on efficient and secure energy systems at different levels: country, cities, districts and buildings, in particular also taking into account the heavy dependence of Luxembourg on its integration in the European electricity grid.
The candidates should have an outstanding scientific track record as well as a documented industry experience, respectively a strong record of collaboration with industry.

In this context your tasks will mainly be, but not limited to:

Project definition and group management:

  • Define and propose a RDI strategy for the group, aligned with the department's strategy and with LIST missions as an RTO
  • Ensure the implementation of the RDI group business plan and that the RDI group's contribution to the RDI Unit/ERIN’s department performance indicators is achieved
  • Overall management, coordination and performance follow-up of the research group: lead a multicultural and multidisciplinary team of researchers and create a stimulating and satisfying work environment within the group, assume the operational responsibility of the group's human resources, hire new talents and take care of their integration into the group
  • Lead the definition and manage projects related to the development of tools, methods and guidelines for companies and authorities
  • Develop Research and Technology project proposals, targeting EU funding, national funding and industrial partnerships (bilateral projects)
  • Guarantee the professional execution of the RDI projects of the group
  • Ensure the implementation of the RDI group´s business plan and that the group's contribution to the RDI Unit’s/ERIN’s Department performance indicators is achieved
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration with other RDI units/groups of LIST research departments

Dissemination, valorisation and Strategy:

  • Develop the valorisation of the group's outcomes in terms of patents, licences, prototypes production, spin-offs;
  • Develop the valorisation of the group's outcomes in terms of publications, workshops, thematic conferences and other dissemination means
  • Develop external collaborations, partnerships and networks
  • Insure the financial follow-up of the group's performance
  • Assist the Head of Unit in reporting tasks and other administrative activities

Scientific and Technology Excellence:

Beside these responsibilities and missions, the Group Leader shall continue to build his/her scientific and technological knowledge and directly contribute to projects relying on his/her high level of expertise.

  • PhD in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Energy Systems, Energy Systems Management, Smart Grids, Physics, or applied mathematics

Required seniority

  • The candidate is expected to have significant experience (10 years) , ideally including at least two years in RDI group management

  • Previous experience in working with public authorities and private companies is considered as a strong asset

  • Track record in management or large projects
  • Track record of granted (EU or national) projects

  • English and French and/or German mandatory
