You will be part of the LIST Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

The applicant will join the Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of ERIN, which is developing knowledge, transferable technologies (e.g. software) and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability of human driven systems. Within the SUSTAIN Unit, the applicant will be incorporated in the Sustainable Energy Systems (SES) Group. The SES Group conducts research and develops innovative tools for the planning and operations of electric energy systems, with a specific focus on renewable energy integration in smart grids.




While opening up opportunities in increasing both shares of renewable sources up to 100% and use of decarbonised flexibility resources, there are challenges in coordination of local energy communities with the public electricity and gas infrastructures. This challenge is twofold: (i) increasing uncertainty in accommodating variable and distributed renewable energy sources; and (ii) increasing complexity in coordinating multiple energy vectors, not only in cross energy carriers within a local energy community, but also with the interactions between local electricity communities having autonomous operation and (co-)existing centralised infrastructures including the distribution electricity grid and the gas network.

To tackle these issues, we are offering a permanent position for an experienced researcher in the energy systems area with good knowledge in the topics of artificial intelligence (machine learning), data analytics, electricity markets, and mathematical optimisation towards sustainable energy systems. The ideal candidate shall demonstrate a significant track record of publications in top scientific journals and of competitive funding projects acquired.

The selected applicant will be asked to conduct research, development and innovation  by defining, acquiring and managing one or several RDI projects in these topics. She/he shall be the PI for some RDI projects.

The main missions of this permanent position are to:

  • Formulate innovative/scientific/technologic concepts in the field of sustainable energy systems.
  • A fast pace of energy transition at the local level of electricity distribution grids, including stochastic increase of load demand from new forms of energy consumptions, e.g. Electric Vehicles, and high penetration of renewable energy sources, especially solar PVs, might cause possible network issues for distribution system operators. Such could be overloading of the transformer or line segments as well as voltage variations (both over- and under-voltage). Flexibility resources from distributed energy resources including (decentralized) storages, EV charging, and other Demand Response Units can be an alternative to increase grid hosting capacity or to solve congestions, without expensive and time-consuming reinforcement of grid infrastructure.
  • The mission of the selected candidate will be to rely on artificial intelligence (machine learning) and data analytics tools to investigate different electricity market schemes and to develop mathematical optimisation tools towards sustainable energy systems.
  • Conduct Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities to develop and promote knowledge, technologies and methodologies in the field of sustainable energy systems.
  • Define, acquire and manage as principal investigator:

    • - RDI collaborative and/or competitive (both with private and public partners) projects
    • Work packages of more complex projects (e.g. work packages in H2020, etc.
    • Technological project (prototype development, assembly of technology components)

  • Develop and maintain his/her technological and scientific excellence for RDI activities.
  • Disseminate, valorise and transfer RDI results (patents, licences, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences).
  • Promote the transfer of RDI results to public and private partners.
  • Write patents, licenses.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Write/review technical reports when required.
  • Make presentations at workshops.
  • Actively contribute to the development of scientific and technological cooperation networks at national and international level.





  • PhD in energy systems, electrical power engineering, applied mathematics or operations research

Required seniority

  • Ideally 10 years of research experience

Technical skills

  • Electric energy systems operation
  • Machine learning algorithms including application to renewable energy sources and consumption patterns forecasting
  • Analytics of big volumes of data
  • Electricity markets with focus on distribution system
  • Applied mathematics at large and especially mathematical optimisation (operations research)
  • Programming languages

Language skills

  • Fluent in English (written and oral)
  • Knowledge in at least one of the official languages of Luxembourg (French, German or Luxembourgish) is an asset
