As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation;

2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of :

  • Analyzing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation department (ERIN) of LIST is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human driven systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policy-making. Within the SUSTAIN Unit, the applicant will be incorporated in the Sustainable Urban and Built Environment (SUBE) research group. The activities conducted within the SUBE group tackle the whole life-cycle of built assets (Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations). They mainly consist in the development and application of methods and tools supporting the transition of the construction sector towards low-carbon, sustainable built environments (incl. districts and cities), also through its further digitalisation.

 

Description

 

The candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers in Architecture, Engineering and Construction, Life-Cycle Assessment and Computer Science.

She/he will contribute to the H2020 SemanticLCA research project, carried out by LIST and Cardiff University (BRE Centre in Sustainable Engineering). The project aims to attenuate and control positively the impact of our buildings and districts on the environment, by developing a new generation of life-cycle assessment (LCA) methods and tools based on Building Information Models (BIM) and Big Data.

As a post-doctoral researcher in the team, the candidate will be mainly involved in tasks associated with:

  • The formulation of requirements
  • The development of the methodology as well as the design and prototyping of the system
  • Moreover, she/he will actively contribute to developing the demonstration site in Belval, Luxembourg, where real-life deployment of the system is planned

While specializing in BIM and LCA, and bringing a field expertise to the whole team, the candidate is expected to focus on Knowledge Engineering (e.g. handling semantics associated to the field of study) and Artificial Intelligence applied to the monitoring and optimized operation of sustainable buildings and districts.

Furthermore, the main responsibilities of the selected candidate will include to:

  • Formulate innovative/scientific/ technologic concepts
  • Disseminate, valorise and transfer RDI results (patents, licenses, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences, etc.)
  • Actively collaborate with other researchers in order to promote interdisciplinary activities internally and externally

 


Profile

 

Educational background

  • Doctoral degree (or demonstrated equivalent experience) in Engineering, Architecture or any other relevant domain

Required seniority

  • Proven track record (papers, patents, conference proceedings)

Competencies

  • A strong knowledge in BIM or LCA applied to buildings is required, both being considered as a significant plus
  • Knowledge and experience in Artificial Intelligence applied to buildings or districts is considered as an asset
  • Proven research skills
  • Excellent writing and reporting/presentation skills (scientific level)
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills with the proven ability to effectively communicate across different levels of the organization and with stakeholders/project partners
  • Result oriented attitude
  • Willingness to work collegially in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment

Language skills

  • Flawless knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required
  • Knowledge of German and/or French and/or Luxembourgish is considered as an asset

Other

  • A motivated expression of initial knowledge and interest in BIM or LCA is required, as the candidate should be able to handle both domains quickly
  • The selected person should show collaborative skills, take initiatives, be result oriented,and demonstrate capacity to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Strong organisational and project management skills
  • Good communication skills (oral and written)
