150 specialists meet to discuss knowledge extraction and management

From 27 to 30 January 2015, 150 specialists in knowledge extraction and management and representatives of companies from a variety of sectors meet at the Abbaye de Neumünster in Luxembourg-Grund for the 15th International Conference on Knowledge Extraction and Management.

Organised each year by the EGC association, the conference is hosted this year by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). Held under the honorary presidency of David Taniar of Monash University, Australia, and under the patronage of the French Institute of Luxembourg, it benefits from the financial support of the Ardans society.

The EGC Association brings together researchers, especially Francophones, in business intelligence, knowledge extraction and management, machine learning, databases, statistics, and more widely interested in all scientific and technological advances in data mining and cognitive applications. Its objective is to promote multidisciplinary exchanges between academic and industrial researchers to present the state of the art in these areas, to identify the needs and challenges and to encourage development.

The annual international conference of the EGC Association is a key conference in the field, as referenced by the hundreds of articles submitted for the 2015 edition and the quality of the 22 contributions selected as full-length presentations. The 2015 edition focuses in particular on information visualisation and industrial applications, and welcomes keynote speakers including David Taniar, Torben Bach Pedersen of Aalborg University (Denmark), Morten Middlefart of Social Quant, Inc., during the "industry" special session, and Thomas Baudel of IBM France.

This event is part of a major strategic context for many countries and companies. Indeed, in a connected and digitised world, producers of information (human, sensors, computers, etc.) are increasing an exponential rate, making it fundamental to use computer tools to interact with these complex, dynamic, heterogeneous data masses of variable quality. This is particularly true for scientific data.

This is the reason why the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), created in January 2015 with the merge of CRPs Henri Tudor and Gabriel Lippmann, has set up in its department "Environmental Research and Innovation" (ERIN) an " eScience " unit, dedicated to the analysis and data visualisation with a special, albeit non-exclusive interest in environmental applications. Indeed, the large volumes of data constantly produced by biological and environmental studies (notably via networks of high frequency sensors and various simulators) are a priority area for the development of new software tools, innovative processing architectures aimed at consolidating the development strategy of this new unit.

This first international conference hosted by LIST is an excellent opportunity for researchers of the eScience unit to present their scientific approach and to strengthen further their network of contacts with a view to research partnerships and innovative applications.

The conference has been organised under the patronage of the French Institute of Luxembourg and benefits from the financial support of Ardans society.
