A prize-winning visit to Tokyo for a LIST researcher

Published on 16/03/2018

From 28 February to 3 March 2018, in the framework of its activities in Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN), the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) participated in the Young Professional event (Y-ISEF) of the 2nd International Space Exploration Forum that was held in Tokyo (JP).

In this context, Ramona Pelich, LIST researcher in the field of remote sensing and eco hydrological modelling, scored a double prize-winning hit at Y-ISEF 2018. A few months ago, she has been selected by the Ministry of Economy to participate in the event and to represent Luxembourg.

Y-ISEF 2018 brought together around 80 young people between the ages of 18-35 from different nationalities active in different areas of the space sector. This year, part of the Y-ISEF event included a two-day “ideathon” where teams from across a selection of research domains and nationalities competed against each other on a space science idea judged by the event’s sponsors. The research team Ramona worked with presented the idea and design of an international collaboration project featuring lava caves as part of an initial settlement of the Moon called “Planetary Exploration in Astronautical Cave Environments” (PEACE). It proved an instant hit, landing them with the Mitsubishi Electric Special Prize and the 2nd place overall at Y-ISEF out of 10 participating teams.

Ramona Pelich then participated in the "Earth observation, disaster monitoring and risk assessment from space" forum at the University of Tokyo where she presented the flood monitoring work conducted by LIST’s Remote Sensing team. She also visited and gave a talk at the International Centre of Excellence for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) under the auspices of UNESCO.
