Ecologistics comes to a successful close with the demonstration of a tracking and tracing solution for efficient supply chain logistics

The Ecologistics project, in which the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) was a partner, has come to a close with the final conference, “Added-value of IT tools and GS1 standards for implementing traceability in logistics,” held on June 5th, 2015, at Euralogistic in Dourges, France. The event featured a demonstration of the tracking and tracing solution developed within the project, based on two case studies.

With the full name “Efficient Carbon-reduction and Optimisation of Logistic Operations Generated via Innovative Services, Training and ICT using Cooperative Standards”, Ecologistics aimed to improve the flow of product tracking information between companies in North West Europe by developing an ICT tool for supply chain synchronisation over the Electronic Product Code (EPC) network. A European tracking and tracing standard, EPC allows unique tags to be attached to products and other assets travelling through the supply chain, making it possible to track the real-time location of any specific item.

The project brought together a range of companies, research centres and partners active in the supply chain logistics sector from France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands, including LIST, which was responsible for communicating with SMEs to identify their supply chain needs and to create awareness among them of ICT solutions for sustainable logistics.

The functional tracking and tracing tool developed within Ecologistics is based on open-source software and is now available as a free download for companies, which can customise it to their needs. It will also be used to train operators to EPC standards. The tool will help make it possible for companies to maintain more efficient and collaborative supply chains, improving traceability and reducing freight congestions, waiting times and unnecessary trips.
