From Luxembourg to Sweden with LIST micro controller Kniwwelino

Published on 22/03/2018

Within the scope of its BeeCreative4Kids – research project, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) recently participated in various events: LIST micro controller Kniwwelino travelled from Luxembourg to Sweden!

BeeCreative4Kids is a project run by LIST, Luxembourg Script and the Service National de la Jeunesse (SNJ) and supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) that  aims at raising interest in digital and scientific activities for children of 6 to 12 years old. Thanks to the creation of Kniwwelino, children do not only work with the latest ICT tools but are also able to learn and enhance their digital skills through them.

Kniwwelino at IT One hackathon in Luxembourg

On 16-17 March 2018, LIST’s researchers took part in the hackathon organised by IT One, the platform for ICT decision-makers in Luxembourg.

Three challenges were proposed in this year’s edition : Machine Learning by Docler Holding, Open Data Challenge by Digital Lëtzebuerg, and the Make@on by Bee-Creative. While the first two target adults, the latter is a contest where children aged 6 to 12 were inventing new objects to support a smarter and sustainable lifestyle.

Participants could benefit from LIST’s Kniwwelino platform and technical advice and exchange with other coding enthusiasts. The weekend attracted many students and young adults as well as special visitors like Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Minister François Bausch who did some LIVE testing of the programmable Kniwwelino micro-controller

As part of a study to assess the impact of the opening of public data in Luxembourg, LIST researchers were also present to interact with the participants who chose the open data challenge and collect their feedback and uses of these data.

During this 2-day event, visitors had the opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues, other students or friends, exchange with other participants, in order to develop a new application as response to one of the proposed challenges. 25 teams of adults and 5 teams of children participated to the concept. Teams who wanted to explore Kniwwelino’s possibilities could do some testing and use the provided sensors and boards to implement a physical prototype of their idea.

Kniwwelino officially presented in Sweden

On 18-21 March 2018, LIST’s researchers participated in the Twelfth International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interactions (TEI) conference held in Stockholm, Sweden.

TEI is dedicated to presenting the latest results in tangible, embedded, and embodied interaction. The theme of this 12th edition is Post-digital Design. On Monday afternoon, the BeeCreative4Kids project team presented Kniwwelino as a demo entitled : « Kniwwelino: A Lightweight and WiFi Enabled Prototyping Platform for Children ».

Researchers and students from leading institutions - Including Hiroshi Ishii, who is considered as one of the godfathers of Tangible User Interfaces - all over the world passed by the booth. They showed impressed by the Kniwwelino project and shared their ideas for future directions.

What’s next for spring 2018 ?

LIST’s researchers will participate to Springbreak 2018 on 22nd of March and present Kniwwelino as part of the innovation day. On 24th of March, LIST’s researchers propose the workshop « Programméieren mam Kniwwelino fir jiddereen » as part of the journée Edusphere in Walferdange.
