ICT Spring and Space Forum 2018: FinTech, Digitisation and Space

Published on 23/05/2018

On 15-16 May 2018, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) took part in the ICT Spring Conference held at the European Convention Center in Kirchberg, Luxembourg. During the two days, researchers from LIST presented their expertise at a dedicated stand, as well as at seminars organised for the event, focusing on the three areas of strategic importance highlighted by the organisers: FinTech, digitisation and space.

Space technologies

On the topic of space, LIST presented its activities in terms of remote sensing and modelling of natural resources, specifically in the domains of agriculture and climate change, hydrological risks and monitoring of the oceans. Several activities in particular currently underway with the European Space Agency (ESA) were placed in the spotlight:

  • The Grid Processing On Demand  platform which, thanks to work by LIST researchers, makes it possible to generate a flood hazard map at Europe level, based on 10 years of imagery obtained from the ESA's Envisat satellite.
  • le The M2M-SAT "Demonstrator of Light-Weight Application and Transport Protocols For Future M2M Applications" project, funded by the ESA, where researchers work specifically on optimising application protocols for the Internet of Things, for integrated networks.

Over at the Space Forum, Lucien Hoffmann, Director of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department presented the smart spatial solutions developed at LIST for the management of natural disasters.

FinTech

In terms of FinTech, LIST presented its TISRIM tool, a tool for the analysis and management of information security risks, enabling companies to manage risks in a simple, effective and autonomous manner while remaining compliant with international standards.

At the FinTech summit, Beatrix Barafort, Service and Process Governance Group Leader at LIST, highlighted best practices to prepare for compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the new set of regulations on European data protection applicable from 25 May 2018. On this point, LIST has also lent its expertise to the National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD), supported by Digital Luxembourg, in the development of the "GDPR Compliance Support Tool", a tool providing an innovative, intuitive solution that allows users to check the maturity level of their organisations in terms of data protection.

Digitasation

In the realm of digitisation, LIST showcased its Kniwwelino microcontroller for children aged six and older, which allows them to develop fun applications on the topic of the Internet of Things.

Real-life demonstrations were also offered to visitors at the neighbouring Luxinnovation stand. The national agency entasked with the economic development of the country presented numerous "made in Luxembourg" innovations at the event. At the digital summit, Eric Dubois, Director of the IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department was also able to give a round-up of LIST's many activities focusing on smart cities.
