Dr Kaniska Mallick, a project leader in the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), has recently been elected as one of the Vice-Presidents of the International Commission of the Coupled Land Surface - Atmosphere System (ICCLAS). ICCLAS is one of ten commissions of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).

The core research themes of ICCLAS are:

  • Land surface water and energy balance, surface-atmosphere coupling,
  • Evapotranspiration modeling and measurements at multiple spatial scale,
  • Linking water and food security,
  • Climate and land cover dynamics on hydrological processes,
  • Combining Earth observation and models for understanding hydrological processes from catchment to global scale.

The objective of ICCLAS is to expedite research, scientific exchange and knowledge transfer with respect to the above research themes through the organization of symposia and workshops in collaboration with other IAHS commissions and international organizations, and through the publication of edited volumes that summarize the current state-of-the-art.

ICCLAS actively contributes to the research programme of Panta Rhei, UNESCO (Water Security: Responses to Local, Regional and Global Challenges programme), WMO (World Meteorological Organization), WCRP (World Climate Research Programme), GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Exchanges), and IAMAS (International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences), IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme), ILEAPS (Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study) etc.
