LIST spin-off attracts North American investors

Published on 17/09/2018

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), an institutional shareholder of Open Assessment Technologies S.A. (OAT) since its creation in 2013, is delighted about the recent investment made in its spin-off by the American company ACT. This investment once again highlights the international recognition that OAT has gained in recent years, positioning itself as a global leader in open source assessment solutions after beginning its adventure at the heart of LIST laboratories.

Furthermore, this investment is a real recognition of the quality work begun by LIST researchers more than 15 years ago in what was then the innovative market of computer-based assessment. OAT markets an open-source computer-based assessment platform, known as TAO®, first developed in 2002 thanks to a series of research projects. These projects were carried out by the former Centre de Recherche Public Henri Tudor – which joined together with the Centre de Recherche Public Gabriel Lippmann on 1 January 2015 to form LIST – and the University of Luxembourg.

Over the course of the projects, the innovative electronic TAO assessment platform gradually came into being until it had developed enough to launch a dedicated spin-off: OAT. Created in 2013 with the support of the Dutch company Cito, a global leader in the skills assessment domain, OAT has since then continued the development of the tool, obtaining increasing recognition within the industry along the way. However, it has above all established itself as a world leader in open source assessment solutions and has carved out a place for itself in the computer-based assessment landscape.

Beyond the recognition of the international market for the Luxembourgish company, the investment of ACT, leader in the United States in the area of university study and career preparation, puts the spotlight on research developed in Luxembourg. It shows a good example of the way in which work carried out by researchers in their laboratories can change our day-to-day lives in the long-term.
