Water Security and Safety

Climate and land use changes are putting water resources under increasing pressure, threatening water security and safety around the world. Despite substantial efforts to address the problem, many water resources remain 'at risk' as a result of these threats and the pollution from urban, industrial and agricultural activities. Many of the pollutants that can be found in our rivers are partly resistant to wastewater treatment and due to population growth their quantity has increased by 25% over the last 15 years.

Our research challenges

We produce new knowledge, expertise and technologies to support the public and private sectors in their efforts to manage water resources in a sustainable way. Our work focuses on the following research challenges:

  • Understanding and modelling the complexity of the natural water cycle
  • Developing new solutions for decreasing the pressure on aquatic ecosystems
  • Developing new technologies for monitoring water quality and quantity
  • Developing integrative water management strategies for an efficient policy support

Key partners

Our partners are public bodies at national, European or international levels as an important part of our mission is scientific policy support.

We also target the private sector, especially SMEs or industries dealing with water treatment and sensor development and marketing, water utility managers, industrial sectors such as the bottled water industry or the manufacturing industry, the insurance sector, environmental and agricultural consultant companies, earth observation software engineering companies.
