Sustainable Polymeric & Composite Materials

The Sustainable Polymeric & Composite Materials (SUSMAT) research unit aims at the production of new environmentally friendly functional polymers and composites, studying the physico-chemical and thermo-mechanical behavior of the related materials by a combined approach of instrumented experimental testing and adequate numerical modelling.

SUSMAT research unit intensively participates in the National Composites Centre - Luxembourg (NCC-L).

Our research challenges

We focus on three main areas :

  • The design and durability of high performance and multi-functional polymer-based composites
  • Interface engineering towards better performance and durability
  • Bio-based and sustainable polymers and composites

Our activities include research and development concerning:

  • The design and production of multifunctional composites
  • Bio-based polymers and composites
  • Durability of composites
  • Adhesion and compatibilization of fibres/matrix
  • Complex architectures at interfaces
  • Polymer chemistry and macromolecular engineering
  • Surface treatment and characterisation
  • Efficient composites processing

Key partners / Market focus

We work in close collaboration with the polymer and composite industry and its suppliers, and with the support of the European Commission, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and the Luxembourg National Research Fund.

Our current key partners are Good Year, ESA, Arcelor Mittal, Rotarex,Tarkett, DELPHI, IEE, Wölfel, Weber, SimeLux Simaform, Anthogyr, Granta, IL Cosmetics, Roquet, Strea, OEC, Saint Gobain, TextilCord.
