LIST WATER LECTURES Seminar Series 2018 #10

As part of the LIST Water Lectures series organised for the fall session 2018, the next event will take place on 16 October 2018 at LIST premises in Belvaux (LU).

Dr. Ilja van Meerveld, Department of Georgaphy, from the University of Zürich (CH) will be the invited speaker and will make an oral presentation on « Surface and subsurface connectivity ».

Abstract

Hydrologic connectivity is the linkage of separate regions of a catchment via water flow and determines which parts of the catchment contribute to streamflow. Hydrologic connectivity includes vertical connectivity due to rising groundwater levels, lateral connectivity due to hillslope-riparian zone-stream connectivity and longitudinal connectivity due to the expansion of the flowing stream network into the headwaters.

In this presentation, I will use the results from detailed hillslope groundwater studies and streamflow mapping to highlight the effects of connectivity on the runoff response and streamwater quality and to discuss different ways to determine connectivity and source areas based on point measurements. By comparing the different types of connectivity at different study sites, I hope to explore the similarities and differences between surface and subsurface connectivity.

The LIST Water Lectures series were launched in January 2017 and covers various aspects of water resources research towards a sustainable river basin management. The series aggregate a group of outstanding experts and scientists in water resources research and related fields. They are funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and organised by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) in the framework of the Doctoral Training unit in hydrological sciences’ activities.
