Built environment

By 2050, nearly two-thirds of the global population will live in urban areas. This rapid urbanization will amplify environmental pressures, resource constraints and social inequalities. Cities must adapt by becoming smarter, more sustainable and resilient to climate and societal challenges.

At the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), research focuses on both designing and transforming the built environment to support sustainable living, efficient mobility and accessible healthcare. We develop innovative materials, digital solutions and analytical technologies to accelerate the transition towards climate-neutral cities, next-generation mobility systems and high-quality healthcare infrastructures.

Through collaboration with industry and policymakers, our researchers and engineers help shape inclusive, future-proof environments that enhance wellbeing, safety, and Europe’s digital competitiveness.

We help design climate-resilient cities, sustainable buildings, and zero-emission mobility systems. Our research in healthcare systems and technologies accelerates progress in medicine and helps improve the well-being in living and working environments.

ACTIVITY DOMAINS

Our work in the built environment is structured around three interconnected activity domains. Each addresses key societal and technological challenges while fostering sustainable, competitive, and inclusive growth:
