By 2060, global demand for material resources is expected to nearly double compared to 2017, intensifying environmental pressures and resource competition. Europe’s response is clear: transform industry to be clean, circular, and resilient.
At the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), research drives this industrial transformation by advancing sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy systems. We develop circular economy strategies, innovative materials and digital industrial solutions that enhance efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability across sectors.
LIST aims to support Europe’s shift under the Industry 5.0 vision, the Net-Zero Industry Act, and the Critical Raw Materials Act, fostering a new generation of industrial systems that balance performance, environmental responsibility and energy security.
Our work in the Industrial Environment is structured around two complementary activity domains.
Each contributes to building a more circular, efficient, and resilient European industry:

Developing circular economy strategies, innovative materials and coatings, biomanufacturing processes, and smart composites to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen industrial competitiveness.

Advancing renewable energy generation and storage, efficient cooling technologies, advanced catalysts, & power electronics to accelerate the transition toward carbon-neutral & energy-secure industrial systems.
