Industrial environment

By 2060, global demand for material resources is expected to nearly double compared to 2017, intensifying environmental pressures and resource competition. Europe’s response is clear: transform industry to be clean, circular, and resilient.

At the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), research drives this industrial transformation by advancing sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy systems. We develop circular economy strategies, innovative materials and digital industrial solutions that enhance efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability across sectors.

LIST aims to support Europe’s shift under the Industry 5.0 vision, the Net-Zero Industry Act, and the Critical Raw Materials Act, fostering a new generation of industrial systems that balance performance, environmental responsibility and energy security.

We enable sustainable manufacturing, circular economy models, and renewable and clean energy systems. Our research and expertise in advanced materials, quantum technologies, and digitalization strengthen Europe’s industrial sovereignty.

ACTIVITY DOMAINS

Our work in the Industrial Environment is structured around two complementary activity domains.
Each contributes to building a more circular, efficient, and resilient European industry:
