Your work environment

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You will be part of the LIST Environmental Research and Innovation department

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation

(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bio-resources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The selected candidate will join its Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit, which is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human driven systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policy-making.

Within the SUSTAIN Unit, the applicant will be incorporated in the Sustainable Urban and Built Environment (SUBE) research group. The activities conducted within the SUBE group tackle the whole life-cycle of built assets (Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations). They mainly consist in the development and application of methods and tools supporting the transition of construction industry towards low-carbon, sustainable built environments (incl. districts and cities), also through its further digitalisation.

The candidate will work closely with a team of researchers and architecture, engineering and construction domain experts. She/he will be asked to:

  • Design, develop and test software tools for building/ urban engineering systems;
  • Maintain documentation of the developed work, according to the institute’s standards;
  • Contribute to the development of the group’s technological assets, which are mainly information systems and involve the handling and use of Building Information Models and City models ;
  • Be a main actor in the definition of the requirements, the design and prototyping/development phases, as well as in the assessment with professionals towards transfer to the market;
  • Contribute to the licensing of the developed software;

In line with the research strategy of the group, a contribution is foreseen also in relation with applications of Artificial Intelligence techniques, handling of time series data, as well as development of modern user interface systems.

  • Master degree in engineering, with a specialisation or PhD in computer science, software engineering and/or microelectronics
  • Senority of 5 years plus
  • Familiarity with fundamental frontend languages such as HTML, CSS and Javascript/Typescript
  • Familiarity with Javascript frameworks such as Angular, React and Amber
  • Proven track of interface design (mobile, tangible interfaces)
  • Proficiency with server-side languages such as Java, C#, .NET with knowledge of .NET Core frameworks
  • Unit testing, continuous integration
  • Good understanding of database design and management (incl. relational, timeseries and triple store)
  • Very good knowledge of API engineering (RESTful, HTTP protocols, web server configuration, etc)
  • Knowledge of setting up and configuring virtual machines and docker containers
  • Specific knowledge in Building Information Models handling would be an asset: models repositories databases, 3D visualization engines including web-based systems
  • Knowledge in OGC web service standards (CityGML, GeoAPI) would be an asset
  • Knowledge in mathematical modeling tools (Matlab/Octave, SciPy, R) and machine learning would be an asset
  • Knowledge in microelectronics, in particular signal acquisition, conditioning and processing, would be an asset
  • Familiarity with sensor networks, deployment, configuration and interconnection
  • Familiarity with IoT protocols would be an asset, such as MQTT, CoAP, Web Sockets, etc
  • Familiarity with low energy wireless transmission standards (Bluetooth LE, SigFox, LoRaWAN) would be an asset
  • Flawless knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required
  • Knowledge of German and/or French and/or Luxembourgish is considered as an asset
  • Ability to work in a team, while demonstrating a certain level of autonomy
  • Strong organisational and project management skills
  • Good presenting and verbal communication skills
  • Good problem-solving skills
