As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation
(2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bio-resources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities

The selected candidate will join its Environmental Policies group (EPS), a research group of the Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) research unit of ERIN. The EPS group aims to contribute to a better control of environmental risks and the development towards a tox-free, circular and sustainable society via science based support to the definition, implementation and evaluation of environmental policies at national and EU level and regulatory support for RDI at the interface of science, technologies and policies. It targets in particular policies around chemicals, waste, industrial installations (Commodo), soil and environmental management.




The candidate will contribute to the various support activities of the group for national and European authorities as well as companies and to the further development of the group’s RDI activities. (S)he will particularly focus on:

  • Support Luxembourgish authorities in the implementation of soil legislation, especially in the field of contaminated sites, and provide scientific expertise to the further development of soil policies/soil protection
  • Contribute to the group’s activities around the management and evaluation of hazardous chemicals
  • Build a network of LIST’s different activities around soil protection

For these tasks, (s)he will, among others, contribute with her/his scientific and technical expertise to:

  • The derivation and application of science-based decision criteria/methodologies/assessment
  • The identification of potentially soil polluting (professional) activities and sites
  • The exchange with national and international actors
  • The fostering of a strong connection among the various policy areas the EPS group and LIST are working on
  • The management of projects or project work packages; ensure projects follow-up and documentation
  • The execution of the group’s ongoing projects, when required
  • The dissemination of results, e.g. via the "Betriber & Emwelt" platform ("Companies & Environment" platform that informs companies via website, events, newsletters, etc.)
  • The preparation of RDI project proposals to national and EU funding instruments (e.g. H2020)





  • A Master degree in soil sciences or another relevant natural/environmental science or engineering domain
  • A PhD is considered an asset

Required seniority

  • First experience in an RTO/academic environment, scientific/technical consulting, authorities, or industry in the above mentioned fields
  • Knowledge and/or some experience in soil protection, chemical pollution risk assessment of contaminated soils, remediation of polluted soils
  • Experience in other environmental policy/legislation fields is considered an asset, as well as experience in other fields that backs up her/his future tasks/role (e.g. research, environmental management, engineering, innovation, communication/awareness raising, project definition and management, proposal writing, etc.)


  • The position requires interdisciplinary thinking, well-developed communication skills (oral and written) and team spirit to successfully integrate into the multicultural, multilingual and multidisciplinary work environment at LIST and effectively communicate with LIST’s partners
  • The candidate should be highly motivated, pro-active and open for new challenges and to (further) develop a field of activity
  • Knowledge of industry or others sectors in Luxembourg is considered an asset


  • Fluency in English and either French or German is mandatory
  • Knowledge of a third language, e.g. Luxembourgish is considered an asset
