As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today (e.g. adaptation to climate change, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control).

To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is:

(1) to conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation;

(2) to support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of:

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources).
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities.

The selected candidate will more specifically join the Plant Biotechnologies research group which, among others, develops new concepts, products and services based on integrative biology and biotechnological approaches for the valorisation of plant biomass as feedstock of molecules for renewable industrial products and the white biotech sector. The group activities are centred around phytofactory. LIST developed a bioprocess platform that allows using plant cells and chassis organisms cultures as one of the most efficient solutions to produce complex and high added value compounds, which are difficult to either produce chemically or extract from available biomass. The selected researcher will play a key role in the future valorisation of plant-based molecules for industrial applications.




We are looking for a postdoctoral plant biologist who will contribute to the development of a project that is part of a collaboration with a UK-based company, specialised in drug delivery. The project aims at studying the molecular aspects underlying the protection of plants against salinity imparted by formulations comprising hydrolysable silicon particles. In this position the selected candidate will:

  • Be responsible for the setting up and maintenance of the plant cultures necessary for the whole project duration
  • Analyse plant leaves and roots macroscopically (e.g. photosynthetic parameters, phenotyping, stomatal conductance, moisture content, etc.) and microscopically (optical, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, preparation of samples for TEM)
  • Measure the content of primary and secondary metabolites from plant tissues
  • Contribute to gene expression analysis using both a targeted (qRT-PCR) and untargeted approach (RNA-Seq)
  • Work as part of a scientific team and participate in team and project meetings
  • Contribute to the writing of reports and scientific publications as well as contribute to the creation of intellectual property rights (patents, licences, etc.)



  • PhD in plant physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, agronomy, or related field
  • Recognised knowledge and technical expertise in plant stress physiology and plant biochemistry
  • Knowledge of targeted and untargeted approaches in plant metabolomics
  • Ability to work effectively in confidentiality with the industrial partner is required
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems, while maintaining a positive attitude is required
  • The candidate should be highly motivated, pro-active and independent, with excellent reporting skills
  • The candidate is expected to be in her/his early post-doctoral career ideally between 2 to 8 years experience after the PhD obtention
  • Additionally she/he is expected to have:

    • - Experience in paper writing
    • - Good writing and reporting/presentation skills (scientific level)
    • - Willingness to work collegially in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment

  • The candidate will have hands-on experience with :

    • - The extraction and analysis of primary and secondary metabolites (using classical spectrophotometric assays, as well as targeted and untargeted metabolomics)
    • - Microscopy (sample preparation and analysis at the fluorescence, confocal and optical microscope)
    • - Plant molecular biology (qRT-PCR and/or RNA-Seq)

  • To be successful in this position, the applicant should have a strong problem-solving attitude to be able to face and provide/suggest a solution to complex problems
  • The applicant must be a true team player with an open mind allowing work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • An excellent knowledge of English is mandatory, knowledge of French / German / Luxembourgish will be considered as an asset
