The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops advanced technologies and delivers innovative products and services to industry and society. As a major engine of the diversification and growth of Luxembourg’s economy through innovation, LIST supports the deployment of a number of solutions to a wide range of sectors, including energy, IT, telecommunications, environment, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing at national and European level. Thanks to its location in an exceptional collaborative environment, namely the Belval Innovation Campus, LIST accelerates time to market by maximizing synergies with different actors, including the university, the national funding agency and industrial clusters.
The Observatory for Climate and Environment (OCE) operates different types of dense and national networks of hydroclimatology and biodiversity measurements. On behalf of the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development (MECDD), we operate and maintain a biodiversity-monitoring programme in Luxembourg, with an emphasis on species of European community interest (Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC). In addition, the OCE is involved in the development of innovative tools for field ecology.
The trainee will be proposed to join the OCE team in the frame of the NEWTRAP project. This latter aims to develop an underwater camera trap for amphibians in order to produce high-resolution time-series with reduced field labour and no handling of specimens. An intensive field study has been undertaken in one pond in 2019 (capture-recapture), oriented toward the Great crested newt (Triturus cristatus). In 2020, a reduced survey effort will be applied to a larger number of ponds.
The aim of the internship will be to take part in the field deployments, database management and data analyses, with a special focus on occupancy modelling.
